Oak Ridge takes its name from Oak Ridge Military Academy, founded in 1852 and, according to the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, one of the oldest military academies in the United States still in operation, with a 101-acre campus that is itself a National Historic District. That history sits alongside a much younger town: according to the Town of Oak Ridge, the municipality wasn't incorporated until 1998, and most of the area was farmland before that.
